(9:30 a.m. EDT) — Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Quantum of the Seas, has arrived in Southampton, UK, from Germany this evening.
The 167,800-ton, 4,180-passenger next-generation ship will remain in Southampton until November 2 — sailing two short cruises round the Isle of Wight for media and travel agents — before setting sail on its first revenue cruise to the U.S.
The ship will arrive in Cape Liberty, Bayonne, New Jersey, on November 10, where it will be christened. It will be based full time in Shanghai from May 2015.
The ship launches a new class for Royal Caribbean; its 2,090 cabins include 373 virtual balconies. It will be followed by Anthem of the Seas in April 2015, which will spend its inaugural season in the U.K.; then Ovation of the Seas, which will launch later next year.
Stuart Leven, Managing Director at Royal Caribbean International said: “The U.K. is a critical market for Royal Caribbean — our second-largest globally — and Quantum of the Seas’ departure from here is a strategic decision, demonstrating our recognition and belief in the potential of this territory.”
He added: “The new Quantum-class ships offer jaw-droppingly exciting holidays that were never thought possible at sea. There’s nowhere on land that you can skydive, get served by robotic bartenders, ride dodgems, and enjoy mouth-watering food — it has everything that you’d want to do on holiday, and more.”
Quantum will introduce a new set of first-at-sea onboard experiences, such as Ripcord by iFLY, an indoor skydiving experience; North Star, a pod on top of the ship; and SeaPlex, the largest indoor sports and entertainment complex at sea with bumper cars, roller skating and more. Quantum will also host the first Jamie’s Italian restaurant at sea.
